Artist introduction

Artist Sharon DeLaCruz
Expands into New Career
:
1999 – 2000

Sitting in bed, staring at white sheets, I decided to awaken to bright colors and imagined my white sheets as canvas awaiting to be worked on. . .

Behind me was a history of world travel with my family, born in Honolulu, Hawaii, educated in France and later graduating with Presidential honors, Cum Laude in Fine Art and Graphic Design at Washington State University.

While in Europe I toured and worked in Central European countries, the Middle East and the Mediterranean; later traveling to Japan, Indonesia and Nepal, constantly observing the richness of numerous cultures in a nomadic lifestyle.

During the latter part of the 1970s, I continued my art studies in Sweden for eight years with Tjeerd Ackema, (one of Sweden’s leading artists and book illustrators and a favored student of M. C. Escher and Erte) I met many of the leading artists in Europe, Erte, among them and showed my work in local galleries while living there.

Returning to the United States, I settled in Chicago, Illinois in 1987. Working on projects for Sears, National Dairy Corporation, Rubicon Films, Amway, Hyatt Travel etc; principal actress on TV (Unsolved Mysteries) and commercials for Krafts, Motorola, Citicorp, Kohler Corporation etc. I utilized her talents in multiple fields.

I began to revive my childhood sewing skills and explored the world of fabrics utilizing my strong art education to produce exciting fiber arts.

It was a monumental step and a significant breakthrough when I transcended the stereotype and applied my Fine Art skills to a medium generally catagorized as traditional quilting or craft. I completed mural sized textile arts which required 2,000 (+) hours. In the year 1999, I had already exhibited at a major Chicago gallery displaying my work next to 68 other contemporary Fine Artists.

This led to exhibits, commissions, and a revitalization of my earlier artworks which I later integrated into my current web designing and development.(Getting my story and work out to the world, coming soon...I encourage color awareness. "all colors can be beautiful especially, when ugly colors are used elegantly". )

In addition to 26 years of art and design experience, what began as an introductory course in computers at Truman College in Chicago, Illinois led to a graduation and certification in web site development.

I was highly recommended and accepted, in an accelerated computer training program. This was a curriculum of high intensity learning that put me on the cutting edge of technology by the year 2000.
